How to handle a grievance at work: a fair procedure

A grievance handled well defuses a dispute; handled badly it becomes a constructive dismissal claim. The ACAS Code sets the standard.

The steps

  • Let the employee raise the grievance formally in writing.
  • Hold a meeting without unreasonable delay to discuss it.
  • Allow them to be accompanied by a colleague or union rep.
  • Investigate where needed, then give the decision in writing.
  • Offer a right of appeal to someone not previously involved.

Why it matters

Ignoring or mishandling a grievance can support a claim of constructive unfair dismissal if the employee resigns in response. A documented, consistent procedure protects you.
